G9 rattle/gear mesh noise at medium/high rpm
Hi Everyone,
I just got my first G9 and it has what sounds like a gear noise at medium/high RPM. At low speed, the sound is not apparent. The cart still reaches what I would assume to be a good speed. Things I’ve done: Inspected differential - no missing teeth, no signs of wear, oil was not burnt nor did it have water in it. I replaced the oil and put it back together... No change in noise Inspected the belt - it seems OK. It’s 1 3/16 wide which is the spec’d width as far as I can find Isolated motor / Trans - removed the belt and ran the engine up to high speed, the sound was not there Adjusted Cables at the shifter - they seem tight when pulled, not sure what else to do with them. I’ve looked around and read about adjusting at the transaxle, but I haven’t been able to see the mechanism there and haven’t touched it All of the sheves seem to be moving appropriately It seems to me to be coming from the transaxle, but I could be missing something. Is there more diagnostic that I should to to further isolate? Thanks for the help! |

Re: G9 rattle/gear mesh noise at medium/high rpm
When you looked inside the transaxle did you tear it down enough to check bearings? Most all golf cart rear ends are splash lubed - the only lubrication that makes it to the bearings on the input and intermediate shafts are "splashed" off of the spinning gears in the bottom of the case that dip through the gear oil. They can and do go dry sometimes. The driven clutch is the most common rear end issue I've personally seen on older Yamaha's, but if it checks out OK I'd be tearing down to look at bearings.

I didn’t get all the way to inspect the bearings.. I could do that. I did check for slop and everything seemed pretty tight.
When you mention the clutch, how do I know if it checks out? |

I usually take the secondary clutch off and inspect it for wear. The input shaft is also a suspect area on these carts.

I'm betting a worn secondary clutch, a worn input shaft, or both. |
