Default Robin 2PG Turns Over Too Slow

Hi All!

Early 80s EZGO with a 2PG. It had been running just fine. Slowly over the course of an evening drive it started taking longer and longer to get the belt tensioned up and take off and it finally stopped. Turns over very slowly and never fires off.

New battery and new 6ga wiring with new connectors has been tried. Still turns over too slow.

Found spark plug a little loose but that didn’t make sense for the cause and it wasn’t.

Took the belt off the generator and it spins fast with no belt.

I’ll try to get a video uploaded somehow.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Pull the plug and turn the engine over by hand. See if it's seizing up.

Took the plug out and it turns freely. Hit the the key and it turns over at its normal fast pace with no plug.

That’s a good sign.

In that case I’d suspect bad ground, worn or stuck brushes, worn starter

Check voltage at the starter when cranking. Also check for voltage between the starter’s ground wire and negative battery terminal. (Yes check for voltage between these 2 points. There should be none. If you show voltage here then it indicates a bad ground)

Thank you very much for the tips! Now to figure out which lugs are what on this thing.

Edit: did some preliminary continuity tests and found that there is continuity from the solenoid to all four lugs of the f/r switch and all four of the S/G. Is that normal?

Well I’ve tried a new continuous duty solenoid and that hasn’t helped either. Turns over plenty fast with no plug and the plug has spark. Is it the S/G and how do I test that if it is?

You need to check voltage at the s/g to make sure it’s getting full available voltage and make sure the ground is good. Voltage drop on either circuit will make it struggle under load

Only getting 11ish volts across A1 and F2 when I hit the pedal in reverse. Forward across F1 and A2 is around 10, dipping to 9.xx often while cranking.
