Re: 48V charger keeps tripping 15A breaker
i'll send a pic of the SCRs tomorrow with testing instructions. i dont have one of these at home. describing the appearance of a scr is difficult. fyi- a Silicon Control Rectifier is basicly a diode that controls the current passing through it with a third "gate" that a typical diode does not have. this allows the charger to tailor the charge rate, as opposed to controling only the charge voltage and time duration, as older or more basic chargers do. i will send more help tomorrow.

Re: 48V charger keeps tripping 15A breaker
I would be surprised if any modern charger uses SCR's. They would use Triacs if they are using phase control of the AC. (Same as most lamp dimmers)

Re: 48V charger keeps tripping 15A breaker
triac is bi-directional, turning ac transformer output into dc battery power is a desirable aspect of the scr.

Re: 48V charger keeps tripping 15A breaker
i like Lester as a brand, but a little pricey. BUT, i would never recommend the E-series (Economy = cheap) Lester (Too many failed transformers).

Re: 48V charger keeps tripping 15A breaker
1- unplug charger from cart and wall
2- unplug large block of wires from control board- VERY IMPORTANT 3-using lowest Ohm setting, check from "long stem" to "heatsink" (should be "out of range" very high) 4- check from "long stem" to "short stem" (should be 30-50 ohm) |

Re: 48V charger keeps tripping 15A breaker
Thanks to all for the help.
Just to close out the thread here is the cause (and solution). By unplugging the control board and also bypassing the relay I forced the charger to turn on as soon as the AC cable is plugged into a wall outlet. Even without plugging the DC cable into a cart the breaker would trip after 8 or 10 seconds. I then unhooked from the heat sinks the heavy wires that come off the secondary side of the transformer, reset the breaker and plugged in the AC while I had a volt meter on those heavy wires. It read zero volts. Therefore it seems like the transformer is bad. TJ |
