Makes sense. Thats why that box/drawer in the parts dept. has 2 part numbers on it, but always had only one part inside. I have only had them slide all the way to the seal on really trashed input shafts where the spring seat has been missing its clip for a long time.

Is the cartspartplus (CPP) power package which uses their own spring and a machined Yamaha sliding sheave a good setup? He says their spring is not near as stiff as some aftermarket so I shouldn't see increased clutch wear as a result of a spring that is too stiff. Or, should I just buy a stock (unmachined) Yamaha sheave and a stock UMAX spring?

New sheaves, ramp shoes and the u-max spring will give you good performance with parts that were engineered by Yamaha to work. If you want to do more to modify your stock cart, Plowmans has several ways to go.
