Motor loud after warming up
Need some advice. I got a 98 with the 295 in it. it starts great runs pretty good, has a quiet back fire when letting off the gas. I have the screw on the carb turned out probably 6-8 turns. If I screw it in the back firing gets worse. That being said my question is the motor is nice and quite for about the first 30 seconds then gets very loud. I don't believe it is a exhaust leak can't feel any air coming out of anywhere it shouldn't be, I have my valves set right. What else should I look for???? I don't think it is a rod knocking but it does get louder with high rpm's

Can you post a video that shows the difference in sound?

Re: Motor loud after warming up
If its the original motor the connecting rods bolts are probably backing off. But usually they knock all the time. But weird things happen. If that idle screw is 6 turns out you need to rebuild that carb.

Re: Motor loud after warming up
The backfiring can be caused by the butterfly in the carb not closing all the way just prior to the pedal micro switch opening. The knocking or "clattering", as was stated, could be the connecting rod cap bolts loosening up which will lead to eventual breakage of the con rod/s. If one breaks it can/will slap the block and could crack it. Maybe start with the key off and look into the carb throat while depressing the pedal. The butterfly should not move before you hear the click of the pedal micro switch. If it does then adjust the linkage of the throttle a little and test again.

Re: Motor loud after warming up
Thanks for the replies. I can not get a video that you can hear anything that is going to help. I'm sure it is the original motor. Thinking of sending in for a rebuildable core and stepping up to a 350. Any thoughts on good places to get a motor?

Re: Motor loud after warming up
Depends on your budget but CT rebuilds makes a great drop in engine. Search the board and you'll find their number.

Re: Motor loud after warming up
everything is compatible except the carb, You'll reuse your entire electrical (coil, wires, etc) - it's definitely a noticeable increase in power, and it's about a 2-3hr swap front to back with simple hand tools.
