Re: New Coil, No Spark
[QUOTE=sontag1;1118551]I have spark! I got a nice little shock trying to hold all of that together and keep it out of the fan! HA!QUOTE]
That's the payoff for getting it working. |

I will gladly take a little voltage to get the baby back in action.
There is no ground between the engine and chassis. Is there a specific grounding point on the engine? |

Re: New Coil, No Spark
Take a voltage reading between the battery negative terminal and the upper chassis. It should be zero volts. Then take another reading between the battery negative to the cradle that the motor is mounted to. Take these readings while cranking.
If you know how to take a resistance measurement, you can do that instead, so you don't have to crank the motor. Resistance should be zero. I can't remember on the G1, but on my marathons, they have a ground strap that connects the swing-arm to the upper chassis. |

Re: New Coil, No Spark
Isn't there a black wire running alongside the orange wire going to the coil?
That black wire should be attached to the coil mounting screw. Follow it back the other way. It should be soldered to the main ground trunk-line. There are many more black wires soldered to that trunk-line along the way. The other end is connected at the negative fuse chassis connection. |

Re: New Coil, No Spark
There is a black wire going to the coil, and it is connected to the "timing plate" by a little screw. I guess in the way it is grounded to the block. That aint much of a ground wire though. I have had this engine out, and I do not remember a grounding strap. This cart is 33 years old. Maybe it got torn off or removed at some point.
Would that info be in my SM? I will go check resistance on the upper / lower parts of the engine. Back in a minute. |

Re: New Coil, No Spark
I'm taking about the spark plug coil. Is there a black wire going to it alongside the orange wire? If so, where does the other end go to?

I then set my meter on 20k ohms and from the negative post of the battery to the top and bottom of the engine, I was getting ~ 0.4 ohms |

Re: New Coil, No Spark
Forget about the readings for now. What about the wire?
Are you sure the negative fuse is tight in the holder? Did you ohm out the fuse or just check it visually? |

Re: New Coil, No Spark
I will double check that fuse. I just looked at it.
Here is one of the schematics out of my SM. Does this reflect a ground to the chassis? |

Re: New Coil, No Spark
That pic doesn't show how all the components get grounded through the trunk-line. Ohm out the fuse and make sure it is tight in the holder.
