so i found TDC and checked the timing it 44deg in F and 38deg in R so i would say timing is ok. Before i did that i rebuilt the fuel pump and replaced all the fuel lines and fuel filter. its to late in my neighborhood to take it for a test drive and see if the fuel pump and lines made a difference. i will let you know tomorrow. my next move will be to take it to my shop and use my smoke machine on it ans see if i have a case leak.

Timing should be in the 20 range.

i put the ring back where it was so it could not have been off much. even if you split the difference it would be 41deg if you put it at 20 you would have 60deg in reverse so there is know way it could be 20.

Some thing is amis. There are a hundred threads here, saying 18 F, 21 R, as the timing.
40 degrees should have it popping back and unhappy.

Pull the flywheel and see if the key is still installed. That timing is so far off that it can't be the plate. It doesn't have that much adjustment.

It looks like from the manual, when the piston is at TDC, the keyway is at 12o'clock.

When you used the piston stop, did the timing marks line up at TDC?
