Appears that in order to replace the seal the engine must be completely disassembled. What a pain for 1 seal. Thanks for the help.

Who did the original rebuild? Maybe get up with them and see if they will warrant what they did, even partially. Just a thought.

The rebuild was a year and a half ago. I would be embarassed to ask for warranty work. It has always leaked but I was too busy working to worry about it. Now I've retired and have some time I would like to fix it.

Honestly, it's a good experience...It's nice to have a knowledge of the engine you are riding on and it's a great confidence builder... Just keep the gasket surfaces clean and torque the bolts in sequence on the side cover... At the least you know the engine is sound and you'll learn a lot... Good Luck..
