Default Re: Starter doesn't crank on compression stroke

i saw one from a "starter shop", Amp brand i think. "brand new" shorted to the case and blew fuses everytime the gas pedal was pressed. of course when they took it back, they said "no problems found" because it would spin just fine (without any fuses that hated a frame ground).

You are experiencing the exact same symptoms with the old and new starter, so, I'm thinking the starter is not the problem, (providing you got the correct starter). Did you check cleanliness of the battery clamps ?? I've seen this same problem posted on here quite a bit and I think the solutions have mostly been weak battery or poor cable connections. Also, there were a few solutions by installing new brushes.

New solenoid and starter and your battery has checked out good, so, I think your problem may lie in a poor connection somewhere in the high current starter loop robbing voltage needed at the starter. Good luck - RAY

I agree with you the chances are very slim but possible. Take the original starter apart and see if it is full of carbon fouling. If it is clean it up good and reassemble and try it. Or just take the rubber plugs off and see if they are full of the carbon dust.? You can also assess the brushes this way. Good luck and keep us posted

My G9 does the same thing, especially when cold. I have to hit the pedal a couple times to get it to run over.

I tore the start apart expecting to have to change brushes but they were good, so I cleaned up the armature and put it back together.

the belt used to spin on the pulley but with a new belt now it stalls the starter.

its a new Nappa battery so I "assume" its good. I'll have to have it checked out as well as do some testing in the electrical system.

QB, your problem may be, your generator/voltage R. May not be charging the battery!!

Thanks for all the input guys. I only now see my redundant replies.

Battery terminal sounds like a great idea. I didn't know it can look good but not necessarily be good. Going to change both and post back my results.

while i share your disdain for the commonly found ones, you can get the marine style ones with a single stud and put a lug on the existing cable. much better to me, i hate the crummy look of a replacement parts store cable wadded up in there. and i dont like the too-large end on the starter ends of those cables. didnt say thats what you used, but thats what i commonly see.

No, that IS what I used, didn't know there was a cable made with a smaller hole!! That's why I have a wire connector just behind the nut!!

I also use GM side post batterys NO corrosion, ever!!

They will not only corrode they will actually fall OFF the battery Just my two cents again. Boy I'm gonna be broke if I keep saying that I have seen multiple GM side post batteries terminals that have just separated from the battery! Bad! Idea! FYI Mac this is not directed towards you. I m Glad that you like GM's not really
