Re: sheave
Start by taking the front (primary) clutch cover off, to inspect the weights. Look to see if one or more might be out of place or broken and need to be replaced. If they all look OK, pump 1 pump of grease into the zirk fitting on the edge of the primary clutch and pump 1 pump of grease into the secondary clutch sheave (inside sheave, between the tranny and the sheave).
If this works, then you need to search "cleaning primary clutch" using the search feature. Much discussion on this subject here. |

Re: sheave
Good idea. It could be dry and dirty, or there could be some broken parts in there.

Re: sheave
Are you asking about the primary clutch(engine clutch) or the secondary clutch (transaxle clutch)? If you have a 1996 it should be a G16 and the primary would have a cover cap with 3 10mm head bolts that hold it on. They are a 3 weight and roller clutch and the most problems are flat spots on the rollers, causing it to "stick" in the "closed position". The secondary has a floating/moving flange that the "bushing" can wear out if not greased. If you can take a picture or video and let us know. We all want to help if we can. Good luck.

Re: sheave

Re: sheave
If the weights look good and move smoothly when you slide the clutch in and out by hand, I would next look at weather the sliding sheave has to much play, meaning the bushing in the center of the sheave is worn out.
I've never seen a bad one, so I don't really know what or how they act. Somewhere, not to many pages back, there are some video's of properly articulating clutches. Just scan the pages or use the search feature at top of the page. PS, it is important that both clutches get a pump or 2 of grease, that lubricates the shafts that the sheaves slide on. When they are dry they wear out and make noise. |

Re: sheave
I removed the primary clutch cover and inspected the internal parts. Nothing looks broke or out of place and is very clean. I placed the cart in neutral and started the cart. Very noisy. I removed the belt and started the cart. Noise went away, so therefore my hypothesis is that the bushing in the rear (secondary clutch) must be bad. I am a newbee, but is this a logical guess?

Re: sheave
You mean mine?
Noise is often the primary, but maybe not. In the rear it can also be a trans issue. You should be able to see the secondary (on trans) wobble if the bushing is out or move the sheave by hand. The inner sheave has the bushing the outer sheave should be solid on the shaft. Make sure the nut is not loose on it. |
