Pulsar Coil Placement/Setup
81 Marathon 2pg. Wanting to know if the screws in the picture below are the adjustment points for the Pulsar Coil. If so, Im assuming I just need to mark the current positioning of the screws before I remove the p coil and associated parts? Also, where are the magnets located? I didn't see any around the p coil area, or on the backside of the flywheel. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Pulsar Coil Placement/Setup
the pickup is on the flywheel, and you are correct that those screws allow you to rotate the pulsar a bit and adjust your timing. Definitely mark them, but it's amazing how forgiving the timing is on these so putting it back together *real close* is generally no problem

Re: Pulsar Coil Placement/Setup
Is the pickup the large ring attached on the back of/center of the flywheel? For some reason, I was thinking there were magnets involved. Sorry for the newb-ness.

Re: Pulsar Coil Placement/Setup
Yep it's inside the flywheel and as brew said mark the location of the pulsar screws and place them in the same place when reassembling.

Re: Pulsar Coil Placement/Setup
Change it buddy !! If the clutch side needs it then the other seal has been subject to exactly the same number of revolutions. The clutch side wears first as it has more stress with the weight of the clutch hanging off it (which is why there are two bearings that side) but I guarantee that if you only do the clutch side you will soon be wishing that you had done them both.

Re: Pulsar Coil Placement/Setup
Dave said it. The seals are cheap. May as well do them both now and save yourself the trouble of having to repeat the process later. Just changed both of mine with the engine out. Both seals took me about 10-15 minutes of light tapping. I didn't have any wood blocks around, so, short of using a tree branch from my yard, I wrapped the end of a 3/8 deep socket really tightly with a foot or so of electrical tape. This gave it enough cusion to make the install soft and smooth. Don't forget the blue loctite.

Re: Pulsar Coil Placement/Setup
Trust me when I say that I have done the same thing before. Haha. Sometimes things just don't look fun to mess with. You won't be able to get the seal out without removing the pulsar. I took a very fine screwdriver and scratched a fine line on the ring, dead center of (and just under) each of the mounting screws. The screws are pictured in my first post. I didn't have a punch handy, so I improvised. There is no need to remove the coil from the ring, unless you choose to. When you reinstall, just take your time and get it as close to your marks as possible. The pulsar coils are pretty forgiving if your off by a slight hair, or so I've heard.
