2001 work horse runs with choke only
Hello All,
I am working on a friends 2001 work horse and it will only run with the choke on... Once choke is let go it dies, Sounds like its not getting fuel... Any help is appreciated... Thank you, Ant... |

May have been sitting a while and the carb jets are clogging up. Making it run lean. Pulling choke helps fatten the mix back up. Pull carb apart and get a gallon of carb dip to soak metal parts in for a few hours. Sewing needle to help clear gunk in jets.

Agreed, sound like you have a plugged carb. I usually just use a can of spray carb cleaner and a bread tie with the plastic stripped off. Make sure to wear glasses as carb cleaner in the eyes kind of stings..

May have had a blockage in the carb and sitting in fuel for a little while may have eaten it.. I would still consider cleaning it. One of the neighbor's JD Gator was acting up so took her carb apart and found something that resembled a rubber worm had gotten in there.. No idea how but cleaned it all out and it runs better than when she bought it new..

Old ethanol-gas gets a sludge buildup,and it clogs everything.Drain and flush the tank,clean the carb(torch tip cleaners work great),and replace the fuel filter.A little fuel treatment doesnt hurt either after its all cleaned up.Hope this helps.

not trying to hijack his thread but i am having the same problem on a 97 txt. My son ran it out of gas last yr right before putting it away for the winter. I fired it up and it ran fine yesterday and now it is sputtering and wont stay running unless the choke is pulled part way out. Should i clean the carb out like everyone has been saying?

I'm a firm believer in Sea Foam. You might want to try running some through before you take it apart.

Dmack826, carb needs to be cleaned. You could try pulling the fuel hose and drown the intake with carb cleaner but I would pull it a part and clean.
