G1 carburator ??

So we are fixing up the 1981 g1 and put new seals in ect. cleaned it all up , put the engine back in and fired it up. Ran great but was leaking fuel out of the brass plug next to fuel in line. it did not do this before I took it all apart. I tapped on the plug ( I don't know what it's called) with a small hammer to see if it would seal it up . It didn't, still leaked and ran fine. Then I tried to pull it out and it crushed and broke. I tried to put a brass screw into the plug and now it runs terrible. Anybody know what I did wrong. I looked for a replacement carb . and they all say for a "83 and up ??? I think I messed up : ) Help !!!
