Re: 1998 g16 secondary driven clutch noise
Glad you jumped in Mike. A couple of things didn't look right to me but until my clone swap and joining BGW I never did anything with my secondary but grease it.Point is I am anything but an expert.

Re: 1998 g16 secondary driven clutch noise
Whoo there, Now I think I'm seeing the cir-clip slid back on the input shaft!! That should be removed, and I think there should be a seal there, (like in Dave's picture)!!
Now I'm guessing the previous owner kept the gear oil on the outside of the case, instead of in!! Bet there is NO oil inside it!! |

It looks like just part of the clip, behind the groove... |

Re: 1998 g16 secondary driven clutch noise
You are right the clip was pushed against the seal. I will check the fluid level in the morning and report back.

Re: 1998 g16 secondary driven clutch noise
I did remove the clip before I put the spacer in and will order new sheaves. Not sure what to do about the reverse gear round spot you mentioned Mike Mac. Thanks for all the help.

Don't spend any money on that tranny. Find another tranny and put your new spring seat and NEW sheave on it!!
That one is not going to run long. To much damage!! |

So the dark spot in the pic is the shaft?

Re: 1998 g16 secondary driven clutch noise
Yes, and a cir-clip, both have been ground off!! There is NO oil inside, or it would be gushing out of those 2 areas, (black spot and input shaft bearing, with no seal). All that oil caked on dirt, that is dry, is a tell tail sign, that oil had been gushing out of those areas, and the fact that it is now dry, tells ME there is no oil left inside.
Wish I were wrong, but don't think I am!! |

Re: 1998 g16 secondary driven clutch noise
Spent all day in the yard and on a power steering pump pulley on the boat. I plan on checking to see if there is any oil in the trans tomorrow. I have only put about 15 minutes on this cart since I got it, but it didn't feel like it was going to give out. New tranny does not sound cheap. This seems like a major design flaw by Yamaha.

Re: 1998 g16 secondary driven clutch noise
None of these things would have happened with a small amount of maintenance, and observation!! Somebody just ran the dog sh!t out of it!!
My opinion, Yamaha's are the most rugged cars out there!! |
