Default How does a Voltage regulator work?

What I mean is the way I understand it the voltage reg grounds that small post allows 16volts to come from the generator to the battery I get this part My question okay how does it know when to stop allowing this 16volts thus not cooking the battery?

Scroll down to the SCR regulators or the Transistor regulator. It's one of these two. To know exactly you would have to talk to the Japanese Engineer what designed the little hermetically sealed hunk.
