Default The Quest For 30 MPH...

Spent this holiday working on the next speed addition (addiction?) to my 95 Medalist. I have upgraded the motor with one from Plumquick and just added in 8:1 ratio gears. I am now around 25-26 mph based on an iPhone app. So question to the forum is this, what next to cross the 30mph mark? Only other real tangible speed upgrade is 4 gauge cables. Maybe a controller upgrade?

Increase voltage.

Roughly speaking, Amps = torque and Voltage = speed.

Cgtech is correct.

Sharp-eyed readers will notice the cart is a DCS Sepex drivetrain. A higher amp controller should generate a bit more speed. Fresh cables are also called for as well as a HD solenoid. If that's not enough, then consider 48v upgrade. Check with Plum Quick regarding how much controller your specific motor will tolerate.

Another thought to consider since you after this speed range is dumping the stock brakes, there were built for a cart to travel approx 15mph. Consider going to the ausco disc brake setup, as you can utilize your stock brake cables with them.

Thanks for all the replies, that's why I joined this forum

@Gornoman, correct it is a DCS powertrain, so wasn't sure if a controller would give it a bit more speed. The 4 gauge cables are new, haven't upgraded the solenoid yet, but on the list.

@LostHusker, I was actually looking yesterday at the Husco setup. The stock drums are a bit sketchy once you get up to speed. Not worth crashing the cart, too much time invested so far.

If it still has the stock DCS controller it will not like that 8:1 gear setup for long .. You drop in an DCX or XCT Alltrax, new solenoid and will be all over 30 MPH. At 36 volts with the stock 12.44:1 rear it would have been 24-25 with stock tires. You jump to 42 or 48 volts and you better update the brakes and motor..

I would not want to go 30 mph in my cart without upgrading the braking system to have front disc brakes! Try to stop fast from 25 some time and you will see why.

front is....critical....because 70% of weight is transferred to the front when you hit the brakes-no matter how good the rears get-you can only get so much traction on the rear.....

front brakes=much shorter braking distances.

On pavement the above info would be true. On other surfaces there is not enough tracking to transfer that much weight and on a battery operated cart, most of the weight is in the back tires. I guess it all depends on useage.
