I know this an old thread, but I think I got tricked into thinking I had a crank case leak also. After pulling the case and not seeing any breaks or bad spots in the gasket I put new gasket in and back together. Looking over the engine and getting ready to put back in I grab this plug and it was loose. I'm guessing this was my leak all along. O well, it was my first motor pull, so I did learn some stuff. Maybe help someone else down the road. Motor was a 2008 FE350
