Default G16 Yamaha choke issue

I have a 1998 g16 Yamaha. When I run it choked it runs great. When I push the choke in, it coughs and sputters until I choke it again. I ran it for 15 minutes choked and it ran great the whole time. What's going on with this thing?

Check your air filter. If it's clogged it could be causing you issues. Is it burning oil?

This is a classic symptom of an improperly sealed air box or a cracked carb spacer.

A little bit of smoking but not bad and goes away. I'll check air box.

Air box seems tight. All clips are on and it seems right

Ok, air box is tight and I even taped the seal so that's not it. I guess next is the carb spacer. Do I need to pull the body off to get to the carb? Looks real hard to get at.

Run it in nuetral about 1/4 throttle and spray brake clean around carb spacer listen for change in motor if it revs up you have a cracked spacer or bad intake gasket

G16's and up don't have the intake manifold problem's like a G2 style engine. But, they must have good gaskets between the air box/ carb and spacer to cylinder head. Also make shure the nuts are tight securing the air box. Sounds like a good carb cleaning is also in order.

Thanks guys. I've checked to make sure things are tight. Haven't tried the carb cleaner trick but I will. I've checked to make sure pump is pumping gas and it's still the same. Runs great with full choke. I went ahead and ordered a new carb and spacer. Not sure what else to do
