Default Starter blows up.. brand new

Just put a new starter on my 98 club car carry all.. road for 10 mins and belt equalled and starter was smoking.. looks like it blew the brushes out of it.. brand new Starter?

Could a micro switch keep the starter engaged and burn it up?

No these are starter/generators onces they start the motor the engine speeds it up turning it to a generator they are supposed to be "engaged" all the time while running

His problem is someone moved some wires around on the key switch. These wires are to only be hot when the key is turned to start position, which now, are hot all the time now. This is causing the starter/gen to overheat and melt down.
