Default older model ezgo

I'm trying to help out a guy, His ezgo quit running. I load up some tools and drive over to his house. (he's in a area with no phone service) upon arrival I look at his cart. all the battery cables were either broken or in dire need of cleaning. So I clean up the batteries and build a few cables. then he tells me that he installed a new solenoid after looking at that the large post was touching the mounting plate for the controller, so I fix that. now on the solenoid there was a resistor or diode on the small post that was cracked so I will replace that but with out phone service I could not remember if its a resistor or a diode that goes on the small post of the solenoid.( I'm thinking it's a resistor) Then after testing the micro switch on the potentiometer it showed no response with my meter. (I think that I have a few of the big old switches in my stash box)
Anyway I said all that just to ask the question about a diode or resistor. plus why was there not a resistor or diode on the large post?

on the small posts....its a DIODE

and there should be a RESISTER on the large posts.

I went back out to that ezgo cart today, I put a new switch on the potentiometer, now that tested good.

I put a resister and diode on the solenoid.
fixed the ends on a couple wires.
I did not hook up the battery pack yet, Neg is off. However I did hook up the pos. To the battery pack. While doing so my arm touched across one of the batteries and I felt a shock.
The last time I had that happen it was a bad solenoid that had a internal short and was grounding from the mounting bracket and frame. I checked it this time and its good.
What should I check next?
By the way I'm doing this for a guy I know but he lives in the outskirts of town and the cart is in a sand area so you can't drop any screws or washers. Today I had 2 dogs sniffing me then 3 chickens came over to help. FUN,FUN,FUN
