1989 throttle linkage dilemma

Hi everyone... great site
just bought a used EZGO Freedom cart. Disabled the govenor by drilling out
the slotted hole but having a problem with linkage not opening carb enough
to get full throttle without being able to close throttle completely so not to backfire. I've tried the spring on the govenor before drilling out hole but haven't found any happy medium without backfiring...any ideas... thanks

what did you drill out? It is possible that the throttle cable is stretched and could contribute to this problem. I am trying to remember if my carb butterfly opened all the way, I know for a fact that you need to get it closing or it will definitely back fire. I would maybe consider loosening the governor spring and putting it back in spec then go for proper throttle adjustment.

It just didn't have any guts for climbing or speed unless I disconnected the carb from the gov and used my hand as venturi controller while driving. It then ran strong. I tried a number of settings before giving up on the gov altogether.... I have a yamaha G1 (1981) that I'm trying to get this to run like. All kinds of get up and speed with basically the same motor. The ezgo has a new top end and has the power, just not the cabling to adjust right. Thinkin there might be some aftermarket linkage that would work or just have to make something that will unless there's a trick I'm missing.... Thanks for any help...

I would bet that the throttle cable is stretched. It is longer than it should be and therefore, can't pull the mechanism the full amount of travel that it should. You follow me? The cables are not that expensive so I would look at that as your problem. Once you get that replaced, then get the governor back to factory spec and adjust the dogbone in your pic so that the throttle plate closes all the way.

Once you know you have it all working right, then you can play around with the governor and see if you can pick up some top end speed.
