If the diode failed open as you said, then you would have a direct short in the activation circuit which would burn up the MS in the peddle box as described... same results as installing it backwards.

I will try to post a pic later today. I am also going to try to jump the solenoid to see if I can get it to click. I removed the Diode completely as per instruction from a local golf cart repair shop's advice. Also going to put a fuse in line where the reed switch goes and rewire it back to the charger box. That line is the one that smokes when i turn it on. Currently I have it connected directly to the pos battery terminal as described in other posts describing how to bypass reed switch. Will post results later and hopefully a pic or two as well. Thanks for all the help so far.

You should be fine with the failed diode out of the circuit.
