97 TXT Steering Rack R&R
I took out the steering rack, it was worn right in the middle. I was able to get it without removing the pinion gear, does the pinion gear need to be removed (or moved) to get the new rack back in?
Thanks |

Re: 97 TXT Steering Rack R&R
I believe it does.
Don't forget to pre-lube the rack before assembly |

Re: 97 TXT Steering Rack R&R
Just take the plate off to relieve pressure off the spring and you can work the rack in. I just did that this past weekend

Is that the rack guide cover (#10 in the manual) on the front of the steering housing?, there is a compression spring underneath it.

Re: 97 TXT Steering Rack R&R
That spring is what caused me not to be able to get the rack back in. I took the 2 bolts and the plate off to relieve pressure from the spring and was able to get the rack started.
I am at work and can not see the manual you refer to, sorry. |

Lugster, I am interested to see if just replacing the rack and not the pinion at the same time solves your problem. Can we get an update on the steering when your done? Thanks.

Re: 97 TXT Steering Rack R&R
The pinion should be inspected since the rack was worn.
With the pinion being pressed by the spring the rack will not go in. Once the spring is relieved of pressure it will go in by pulling up slightly on the pinion. I do not think the rack can go in first and then the pinion but I could be wrong. |

What do you recommend to pre lube it with? I was thinking about axle grease.

The same grease you use to fill through the zerks.
I use moly based grease. |
