Default Excessive play in transaxle

2001 Workhorse Robin 350. With drive belt off I can move the driven clutch pulley back and forth a fair amount. Is this normal freeplay on the gear assy? Just bought this "non-running" Workhorse and finally have it running and all seems to work good, just don't want to ruin something in the rearend if the excess freeplay is not normal. Thanks for any advice.
