How about blocked vent holes. Just a guess since there was no mention of fire or smoke.

Thanks for all the input.

Grandpas Buggy - I'm in Canyon Lake, CA.

A burned smell accompanied the meltdown/explosion that became very evident after I removed the seat. Some more pics showing the bent case and also some pics of the cart.

There is evidence of melting around the hole in the battery. I suspect you had a bad connection that actually caused the melting and then explosion. Make sure when you replace the battery that you have real clean and tight connections. Heat generated by a bad connection can easily melt the lead terminals. Charging causes hydrogen to be generated in the battery that was eventually ignited.
