Default Question abour Forward Reverse switch

I noticed this morning that the forward/reverse switch is sort of grinding back and forth. I'm guessing it will need to be replaced in the near future.

Can I replace a stock switch with a heavy duty version, if I plan to upgrade the controller in the future? It's a 2000.5 DS 48V.

Also, does anyone have some instructions on replacing the switch? I couldn't find anything for a DS on Youtube. I'm hoping it's just swapping wires, but it never seems to be the case on a cart.

I've done several and usually the hardest part is getting the shift handle off the shaft. Once that's off, the 3 Phillips machine screws hold the switch in place and swap the wires from the old switch to the new one - one at a time so you don't mix them up. Of course as always, disconnect power before you do anything.

Okay, can I replace it with a heavy duty switch so I don't have to replace it again when I upgrade my controller?

There is no reason that you can't go heavy duty. For a little more $, F+R contactors could be used also.

Can you explain what you mean by contactors? Is that something I should change along with a new switch?

They are used in place of the F+R switch and last longer.

Just get the contactor and be done with it! Love that thing!

That looks like a completely different setup than what's on my cart now. Mine has the short "stick". Will this unit work on a series cart? Am I going to have to cut the body to make things fit?

It is completely different. Yes, it does work on a series cart. As I understand it (I haven't installed one yet), after the old F+R s/w is out, the rocker s/w is mounted over the lever hole (using the hole to pass the 3 small gauge wires to the contactors). The contactors can be mounted anywhere there's enough space. E-mail Scotty at the .net address given on the link I gave you for more details. His kit and instructions are a proven set-up.
