Default 1986 Gas blowing out of muffler

i know just enough to be dangerous with carts. I blew the head gasket two weeks ago and stripped down the engine to replace it and while I had it down I learned that the carb I had been using for the past 4 years, which I purchased from a dealer, was for an 88 not an 86 so I replaced that too. When I put it all back together and went to take it for a test drive it seemed like it would never fully fire up. I could smell gas and looked back and noticed the muffler had gas visibly coming out of it and the carb had gas leaking from the bowl. It has a new spark plug and is getting spark so not sure what is going on, any help would be appreciated.

The 88 is a better carburetor. You should have stuck with it.

What else did you do to the engine besides change the head gasket?

There are only 2 ways to get fuel into that engine. Through the carburetor, or through a ripped diaphragm in the fuel pump.

Since you had gas leaking from the carb, I'm leaning that way. Maybe a stuck float, or float level was never set at the factory.

I didn't take the fuel pump off at all and still have the 88 carb it just seemed like before I blew the gasket it always ran rich and backfired so I assumed it was because I had the wrong carb...when I get it back together I'm going to try the 88 carb again

The backfiring is caused by the throttle plate not closing all the way when letting off the gas. It usually leads to blowing out the crankshaft seals.

It is cured by installing a spring on the end of the throttle cable. (See pictures below)

As you know, the 88 carb is a bv-24 instead of a bv-18. When coupled with the right exhaust, it produces 2 more horse power. Brewcitymusic has a thread with real good experimentation results.

This is a thread about ripped diaphragms in the fuel pump.

It may, or may not be part of the problem.

Gas should be mixed 128:1. That's one ounce of oil for each gallon of fuel.
Hopefully you won't have to bbq your muffler to clean out excess fuel, and carbon build up.

It's cheaper to buy the entire pump than a rebuild kit.
