Resistor cart to controller..??
Hey guys. I have a 91 Club Car resistor/v glide cart. I recently had it converted to 48 volts with brand new 8 volt batteries, 4 gauge wires and a 200 amp solenoid to take the load off up top. Bone stock with this setup it did 19 mph on gps. I have since lifted it and added 25" tires. I'm guessing it runs 21-22 mph now.
How hard/involved is it to change to a big controller type setup? I will probably upgrade the motor at some point as well. I want more speed and the torque for the 25s. I dont want to get it to where it is totally unstable and not safe though. who has done this? |

Re: Resistor cart to controller..??
I have converted an Ezgo from resistors to controller. I had to install potbox and controller. A controller will not give you more speed, just more torque and smoother operation. It will also increase your run time.

Re: Resistor cart to controller..??
So to get the speed as well I would need to go to a bigger motor in addition to the controller?

Re: Resistor cart to controller..??
For more speed you will need one of four(maybe more) things. Higher voltage, higher speed(rpm) motor, taller tires/wheels, high speed rear end. I've run my stock 82 ezgo motor on 72v and its plenty fast enough for me, and my tires are only 22". If you raise voltage you need a controller made for that voltage. My controller is capable of runnung anywhere from 48 to 72 volts.

Re: Resistor cart to controller..??
So for me....controller and motor upgrade. I guess the high speed rear end would kill my torque. I really would like to stay @ 48. At what point would my 4 ga. upgraded wires become too small?

Call EMP(site sponser). They have a two speed motor. In the speed mode they go 21-22mph with stock tires. With your 25's you should get more speed. The way I understand it, you could keep your stock controller. Check with them for accuracy.

Re: Resistor cart to controller..??
Yes, they say they can build a motor to work with what you already have. Be realistic with your expectations though, you cant expect wheelies and burnouts without spending cash$$$. Although, I just got through building an EZ on 22's, 500 amp alltrax and a stock motor on 48 volts and it will pull the wheels for a few feet. You already have 48 volts and thats a plus.
