Default '02 CC DS Front Bearings / Hub turns rough

During my repair of some front suspension damage, 2002 DS Front Suspension Damage, I noticed the driver side (point of impact) hub turned rough and not freely when compared to the passenger side. I don't know if the hub was like this before the accident.

After some research here, I am still unsure if I should get new bearings or inspect/re-pack the existing bearings. There is no wobble on the spindle, which makes me think the bearings are fine, but need maintenance or maybe the nut is too tight.

The cart was a gift and I have no idea of the use or maintenance. Not sure if the attached picture is any help, but it sure looks like it hasn't been touch since it rolled off the production line.

Thanks for any help/advice.

For sure take the castle nut off and remove the hub for inspection. Then if all is good, inspect the bearings for pitting and/or wear. If no issues are found, repack them, reinstall it, tighten the nut and back of 1/4 turn to align the cotter pin.

Take the hub off and jam two of your fingers into the inside of the bearing. With the other hand rock the hub back and forth feeling for bad bearings. Repeat on the other side. If nice and smooth then your castle nut was too tight or the spindle has and issue. If new hub, should be pregreased.

It looks like someone ma have replaced the hub at some point before, and didn't use enough grease on the bearings. The grease that's there looks thoroughly cooked to me which could mean the castle nut was too tight, or there just wasn't enough grease.

Remove the hub and inspect the rollers in the bearings for pitting. If there is no sign of damage or obvious wear marks, the spindle is bent and will need to be replaced.

I don't know guys. There is play front to back, but not up and down. Looks like there is some scorching/high temp on the "cones", but no scratches or pitting. The grease seems to have an odd smell, not that "new grease" smell.

I've attached some pics of both bearings, but it may not reveal much. Thoughts?

You got a real problem. Those “cones” were spinning. If that’s the case everything is shot including the spindle.

Looks like water and/or dirt intrusion into the inner bearing.
How do the bearing races look in the hub?
How did the inner seal look? Was it loose in the hub or damaged in any way?

Bearings are cheap. Go to your local Motion Industries or NAPA and get a new set and pack and install them. Go to go....

I agree, get new bearings and pack them well before they go in. IMHO those pics don't show enough grease, by a fair way.
