Default Clicking sound 1986 EZGO

I was wondering if it's possible to modify my 1986 ezgo. I've noticed that when i accelerate, I hear a clicking sound and the cart advance but i cant drive at a slow speed. It seems to start at a certain speed then accelerates gradually as i press on the pedal. A friend has a 1993 ezgo and she doesnt have that clicking sound and and her cart accelerates gradually. She can drive at a very slow speed and i can't.
Can it be modified

The clicking sound you hear is probably the solenoid (contactor) that connects and disconnects the battery pack from the drive system. Her cart also has a solenoid, but it may be quieter.

Being a 1986, your cart is probably a resistor drive, meaning that resistor coils are placed in series with the motor to keep it from running at full speed. (Schematic attached)

When you push the pedal on your cart just far enough for the solenoid to click, there are three resistor coils in series with the motor, so the cart moves at its slowest speed. When the pedal is pushed a bit further, one of the coils is bypassed, so only two are in series with the motor and the cart moves faster. Push the pedal a little further and another coil is bypassed and so on, until all the coils are bypassed and the battery is connected directly to the motor. Having three coils plus a direct connection, your cart has four speeds.

On the other hand, being a 1993, her cart probably has an electronic speed controller, so anything from 0% to 100% of the battery voltage can be applied to the motor, so her cart speed is continuously variable from sitting still to whatever the top speed is.

Your cart resistor drive cart can be converted to controller type drive.
