School Project - How Does The Series Motor Work???
Well, I know how a DC motor works, but those have a positive and a negative...
These motors have 4 contacts... !!!??? Why two extra??? I also need to know about all the inner workings, etc... its for a "How It Works" science project... Can someone please give me a detailed explanation, I looked all over the web and on howstuffworks.com and nothing!!! |

But how exactly does all that come together...??? Is there a website or document somewhere thats explains it???
Besides, you don't have to have 4 contacts to go in reverse, any electric motor can be wired backwards to spin backwards right??? Thanks for helping!!! Now I just need to find a detailed explanation, and probably even a diagram of the inner workings of the motor... |

The motors you are used to are permanent magnet motors, perm mag for short. The magnetic feild (feild) needed is created by magnets that are part of the motor can. The armature takes a direct current and mechanically turns it into alternating current. You only need a positive and negative connection for the armature which can be reverse by simply swapping the cables.
Where a series motor differs is the feild is not produced by a permanent magnet. It is produced by a feild coil. This feild is wired in "series" with the armature. The other components are basically the same. If you use a reversing contactor instead of a F/R switch you are using "4 contacts" to reverse the motor. A Forward/Reverse switch has "4 contacts". The 4 contacts flip the polarity. |

I can see that grade now, A+ YAY!!! roady89, here is what I turned your answer into: Series-Wound Electric Motor – ??? Normally, an electric motor has an armature and an arrangement of permanent magnets. This armature mechanically turns a DC current into an AC current. A series-wound electric motor, as seen in a golf cart, doesn’t have permanent magnets. In fact, the outer magnetic field is created by coils of wire arranged in a series, creating the same magnetic field a permanent magnet would. Electromagnetic field are marginally less efficient than a permanent magnet, however, having the external field controlled by electricity allows the field’s polarity to be reversed. Therefore, the motor can go forwards or reverse without changing the current running through the main armature. |
