Default 88 marathon carburetor question

If I am going to premix my fuel on my 88 marathon is there any reason I cannot use lets say a carb off a 87 or 89, what makes the 88 carb specific to the 88 only, any one know?

It's bigger, better performance. It will run with others, but I would stick with the stocker. That and the exhaust is what gives the 88, more "juice" than the other 2 strokes.

Don and Morgan are right.

The pre-88 Marathons used a Mikuni BV18 carburetor, while the 1988 model used a BV24. That's 18mm vs. 24mm, or a 33% LARGER venturi on the 88. That, paired with the 1988 only exhaust which is MUCH better, gets you some very noticeable power gains on an 88 over the older models. One post I read stated the early models were rated at 9hp, while the 88 was rated at 11hp.

Realized what I'd done as soon as I hit "submit reply"

I've been digging through old posts for the last little while, lots of good stuff from Dave there had his name fresh in my head.

Have fun with that cart, 88 is the best year in the 2pg Marathon lineup IMO - it's a good base to build upon, plus it's peppier than the rest.

You know what's funny? Even though I changed it as soon as I could, I knew you'd probably seen it and would say something. If you're like me, you've probably been called worse, huh?
