G2 input shaft gear removal
Does anyone have any advice on removing the gear on the input shaft? I have the case opened and have taken the input shaft out. The gear did not come with the "new" input shaft I got. Any help would be great. Thanks

Re: G2 input shaft gear removal
Manual does not say that I see. If there are no set screws or clips I'd guess it presses off. I did a CC trans and all the bearings pressed on, put HS gears in it. We used an old hand press you pull the bar down, newer ones have a jack in them. Usually the press will slide them right off, if not then its on some other way. Some times you can cheat with a big vice and fit a tube on it for the gear and press it with that, assuming it fits in there. If its press, I can't really recommend any other way you will destroy something, you need to find a press and its a quick job to do. You can heat the heck out of it and maybe get it off but press is really easy in comparison especially if you need to reuse the part.
Though a gear should have a key or pin in it or something to keep it from rotating on the shaft, while a bearing does not. |

Re: G2 input shaft gear removal
I looked for something in the manual too about the gear removal from the input shaft. Found nothing. I've tried a 3 jaw puller under the gear as well. No luck. I don't want to damage the gear if it's supposed to be reused. I don't have a press, but I could probably ask around. I'll wait to see if anyone else chimes in. Thanks for your help.

Re: G2 input shaft gear removal
Thanks for the link for the manual, but I've got the same one and it just has not got any "how to" go about removing the gear off the bad input shaft. I'm going to have to install it onto the new shaft before I can reassemble things. I'll look in the manual again. Maybe I missed something.

Re: G2 input shaft gear removal
Here's a couple pics of the input shaft. The clutch has been pulled off, but the gear won't pull off. Any ideas?

Re: G2 input shaft gear removal
Smallblock should know or look for other threads here on it. Sure looks pressed. I don't know if a puller would do it, press has more beans I think.

Re: G2 input shaft gear removal
I recently replaced the input shaft on my G8. I purchased the new gear and had it pressed-on. The new gear wasn't very expensive. Seemed like the easiest route.
