Default 2002 Yamaha G22 blown head gasket?

I just purchased my first golf cart tonight from a friend for $1800 which I thought was a pretty good deal assuming the engine problem isn't too severe.

It's a 2002 Yamaha G22A JU0-F4236-00 and he believes it to have a blown head gasket. He said he was riding it and making a noise that turned out to be compression puffing out the side of the head below the exhaust. I circled the area in the picture below where the compression is felt when you spin it over. Do these have some sort of compression release that could be stuck open? Is this typical for a blown head gasket on one of these engines?

From the looks of the top and front cowl emblem, it is a G16, not a 22. The park brake on a 22 is in the left top corner of the pedal. The 16 park brake goes all the way across the top of the pedal. The engine size is embossed on the top of the engine, under the air filter assy. 301cc for the G16, 357cc for the G22.

G16 -- '96-'02, G22 -- '03-'06.

OK I'll have to double check that location. The tag under the seat showed the 2002 G22A but I did find it odd that what I saw online showed the G22 starting in 2003.

On the sticker on the side of the engine I see it does say 301cc. That's disappointing. Maybe I won't bother trying to fix this engine then and just put something decent in it instead.

Also, the 22 has rack and pinion steering, and struts. The 16 has a pitman arm and a-arm suspension.

Fix it and use it! They're a great cart. I've got 2 16's and a 22

Any idea about any type of compression release out the side of the head, below the exhaust? It's just pumping compression out of that area when it cranks over. Not sure if there is a compressions release or a cracked head? Seems to be quite excessive for a head gasket but possible I suppose.

No compression release on the 301cc engine. Pull the head and see what's going on inside.

So cracked head or blown head gasket must be the culprit then. Thanks for the info.

There's nothing wrong with that motor they were good motors I would not just ditch it if it's a simple like a head gasket make sure all the head bolts are tight iv seen them work loose before if someone was in the motor before and didn't properly torque the bolts

Somebody was just in it but I'm not sure what they did to it. I know he had the clutch and all replaced but the one visible head bolt is brand new as well and he said this happened a couple minutes after driving it after picking it back up from the shop.
