Default Yamaha G1 and comet clutch questions

I'm finally getting around to working on an engine I had bought as a project. I removed the dust cover to find it's a comet duster clutch. (Not sure if that's good or not really)First question how do disassemble and remove the clutch? Does it disassemble like the stock clutch or is there a special tool. The bolt I pulled out does not look metric which scares me. And my stock g1 clutch puller bolt doesn't seem to fit. I thought the outter portion would pull off by hand to access the weights and spring. Any help appreciated.

This setup is on an 82 G1 J17

My guess is 3/8 bolt 24 pitch thread which I believe is the standard on most engine. Following this thread as I am a G1 guy! I was planning on reusing the stock G1 clutch on a 440 clone swap, but if the clutch does not perform right I'll get a comet duster or salsbury 780!

Yes, the "Cromet" clutch uses a different thread for the pulling of it. Makes me sick to see someone use the wrong bolt and know the crank threads are damaged

where can i get the comet clutch puller. Hoping i can fix the crank threads as I'm sure they are metric. Wondering now if this clutch and the retaining bolt where meant for an EZ-GO i say this thinking EZ-GO used SAE bolts

If it was truly for a G1, it would have the gear teeth on the back for the oil pump drive. Should be able to get the puller from any site sponsor that sell Comet clutch's.

the bolt that holds it on sould be metric all yamahas use the same size many comet clutchs use std threads in the clutch for the puller, which is really a pusher,it screws into the clutch bottoms out either on the end of the crankshaft or at the bottom of the hole for the hold on bolt and as you thighten it it pushes off the clutch, some times people use the wrong pusher and mess up the threads in the crank. than they run any bolt they can find in and sell it. what worse is they strip out the clutch and retap it with some one off tap from the old days! if you call me with the dia. of the hole i can help you find a puller/pusher good luck!

i got it removed today and it does have the gear for the oil pump drive. the inside looks brand new on this thing. It seems on this clutch there is no what i would call "idler" bearing like the stock clutch. Unless its locked up from sitting. Anyone know for sure?

My dislike of Comet clutch's is the engagement rpm is much higher then a stock Yamaha clutch. If it looks brand new, use it

LOL, that's what I loved about my comet, got those rpms up a little. Too bad my old worn out one decided to sling it's weights.
