Default DS Gas Transmission help

I picked up a 2000 DS Gas cart for free. Here's the catch, I'm certain it needs a new transmission. The back wheels are locked up and there's a place at the bottom of the transmission that is about the size of a quarter and it is obvious that a gear or something else hard has tried to make it's way out of the transmission housing.

I've heard that it is dang near impossible to rebuild and get it right....although I am a pretty good mechanic. So, is there somewhere to buy a new or used one that is NOT $800.00 like the ones I found on Ebay??? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
