295CC engine rebuild
I inherited a 295CC engine that they ran low on oil. I opened up the crankcase and found one of the connecting rods broken. When I examined the crankshaft I found a lot of scarring where the piston mounts. My question is how much should I replace? I can try to get the crankshaft machined and replace the connecting rod or should i just Buy a new Crankshaft? While I;m at it should i replace all the pistons and coneecting rods? I'm just looking for a little advice ti see if anyone else had has this experience.
Thanks |

Re: 295CC engine rebuild help
I would clean the crank journal that maybe just alumunum from the rod
the crank may still be useable when I do this I use a real fine emerycloth ( I hope I spelled this correctly) if you end up rebuilding this engine MAKE SURE that you use real ezgo robin rods not aftermarket ones like Nivels they dont hold up!!!! Good luck on your rebuild!!! |

Re: 295CC engine rebuild help
Thanks,
I thought it may be material from the connecting rod and I'd be able to clean it. I found a connecting rod on-line (LV26606) for $31. Most of the ones I found are around $50 - $60. Is this normal price varience or are these the cheap replacements that don't hold up? |

Re: 295CC engine rebuild
I just redid a 350, I ordered the piston and ring package, you save alot of money there. I also bought new connecting rods because it's only an extra 100 bucks while your in there, also they are only aluminium and the crank is steel. So I don't figure their life is as great as the crank

Re: 295CC engine rebuild
An old Dutchman taught me this.
To clean the aluminum off the crank journal go to your local hardware store and buy some powered lye and mixed with water apply it to the aluminum it will eat it clean but may take several applications it worked for me. It won't eat the steel. But be careful this stuff is dangerous....Good luck Scott |

Re: 295CC engine rebuild
Thanks. I ended up just replacing the broken connecting rod and reassembling the engine. I used a fine emery cloth to clean the crank. It worked great. The engine runs great.
Thanks for all your advice and help. |
