Red hot muffler
Hope someone can help a friend of mine out. He has a 84 ezgo 2 stroke. The cart runs ok-ish for a short run. Then it will start to loose power and the muffler gets so hot, it glows red hot? Thanks for any help.

Re: Red hot muffler
It may be running way rich and burning in the pipe, may be junk in the inlet needle.

Re: Red hot muffler
The muffler is probably clogged up. The oil will dry out in the muffler and cause it to be clogged.
Best thing to do, is to remove it and put it in a fire and burn it out. That should help. I did it to my 89 two stroke, and it helped tremendously. |

Re: Red hot muffler
I think that Phillip has hit it. Just for fun you could loosen the bolts between the exhaust pipe and the muffler to create an air gap and go for a run. It will be noisy as it can be but if the performance stays up then the muffler is blocked. The main reason for this happening is (and now the community starts to yawn as I climb on my high horse) running too rich on the oil. The manual states 128:1 which is 1 ounce of oil to 1 gallon of gasoline. Now if you really, really don't feel happy about that ratio, and trust me it is fine, you could go to 100:1 but if you go much richer ....... well you know what happens.

Re: Red hot muffler
Or use better 2stroke oil.....
In Cartracing there is synthetic oil without (almost) residu after burning. The rest is like you said, not to much oil & gas. Benno |

Re: Red hot muffler
Thanks everyone. I was thinking about the muffler. Good excuse for a muffler bbq this weekend. I'll give an update with some pictures.
Thanks again |

Re: Red hot muffler
If it's glowing red hot and losing power it could also be running way too lean! Checking/replacing the fuel lines and filters and a good carb soak and detailed cleaning might save you burning up the motor..another possibility is that it's getting no oil from the oil injector..
