2PG to 3PG
How hard is it to swap from a 2PG to 3PG? I got a 87 marathon that the 2PG was a basket case so I picked up another engine out a 87 marathon but I just realized that its a 3PG.

Re: 2PG to 3PG
87's were still 2pg's, they didn't go to the 3 till 89. 88 was the first year for the rubber cowl extention. But it is possible someone already put the 3pg in the 87.In that case it should almost be a drop in I would think. Just swap the complete swing arms and axles

Re: 2PG to 3PG
what rok said. you will need the swing arm, motor mount and rear end to start. also muffler, choke cable, possibly the s/g, belt and other stuff. better to rebuild the 2pg.

Re: 2PG to 3PG
$400 will get you the top and bottom end rebuild kit. $100 for a new carburetor. $33 for a new fuel pump and now you have a new engine that will run circles around the EZGO 4 stroke boys.

Re: 2PG to 3PG
The problem with the 2 is that half the bolts are missing for the engine, when I got it, it was complety tore down with a bad crank. I figured it would be easier to find a different one that ran. The only other thing is I only have the 3pg- the po kept the swing arm for his cart. I guess that I have some fab work ahead of me.

Re: 2PG to 3PG
Hmmm more than just fabrication. You will need a 3PG axle. The 3pg engine has the spark plug turned upward, and the whole engine is rotated such that both clutches face the driver side of the golf cart. This rotation allowed for the differential to be changed from a hypoid gearing to a more efficient helical gear design, a change that persists to this day. Sadly the only compatible part is the piston. With all the stuff that Madoc1 mentions I fear that you have a daunting task ahead of you.

Re: 2PG to 3PG
I don't see why the 3 pg couldn't be layed on it's side like the 2pg. Now I don't know about any of the mounts, but i just looked at mine, I have both, and it appears you could morph the 2 into a hybrid. It looks like the intake would fit(maybe) from the 2 to the three. 2 cycles can be mounted any way you want to, sideways upside down laying on the sides . So anyone with a little fab skills should be able to pull it off. not much differance than putting a motorcycle engine in a cart.
