89 3PG 2 stroke issues
Hey all. New here, and to carts also. I bought a "easy fixer" last month, and found it to be a little stumping on it's issues. First of all the cart was sitting for over a year, and the lady said she just couldn't get it to turn over at all. So I had it set in my mind that it was simple. She said that the motor was rebuilt 4yrs prior, and hasn't been drove much at all. First off I knew that I should replace the plug, air filter, fuel filter belts etc. So I purchased a new carb, fuel pump, lines, filters, plug, belts.
Here is my issue. I put the new parts on. New carb was crap and kept flooding. Cleaned the old carb and put it back on. Fuel pump is pumping what seems to me as being ok. Shoots pulses at around 2-3" from the hose. Fuel seems to be getting to the motor, but will not start unless I put my hand over the carb inlet for a second then use my hand to regulate the air fuel mixture. I have tried different settings on the carb with no difference in performance. I have sprayed around the motor and crank to see if it has bad seals, but haven't seen anything with that. I also took a compression test on it and I have 125psi. I decided to do the HEI ignition on it to make sure that its not losing spark, and still have nothing. I pulled the intake off, checked and cleaned the reeds and cage, and found that the cage rubber was missing or cracked around a majority of the sealing area on 2 of the ports. You can see light between the reed and cage on these also. Would the reed cage being like this be a reason why the cart won't run unless it's choked off? It does seem like prior to starting with my hand over the carb inlet that there was some fuel blowing out of it. I am stumped with this, and I have little knowledge of 2 stroke motors. Thanks in advance for the help. |

I think you are on the right track with the reed valves.
Choking it with your hand reduces the amount of air. That means it is getting air from somewhere else. |

That's what I thought too. I am searching for a new cage, but no luck yet. The reeds and stops look good. Just the rubber seal is broke and missing.
