Default Exhaust question

We just purchased a 2000TXT.The problem is exhaust smell. It's not horrible but still noticeable. The exhaust system looks good but my husband is wondering if it may be missing a pipe that attaches to the end of the muffler. The muffler currently ends with a small 3" pipe. Is it supposed to have an extension that would deliver the exhaust further from the car? Thanks
