Charger or Battery problem.
I have Ranger 160 , 6 and 48 volt, dpi acusense charger. Found 3 Batteries with water below plates. Filled to above plates, with distilled water. 12 hour charge did not shut off yet. Was at 5 amp charge. Shut off filled to proper level, took 10 mile ride then charged for 12 hours never got below 15 amps. This morning, bubbling alot, gassing much rot egg smell, batteries reading 51.09 and each battery reading over 9.0.

hmmmmm well your batteries are fully charged at the voltage they are at.... but seeing as how you found the 3 with low water levels. go ahead and disconnect the charger.....wait 12 hours to see what the pack voltage settles at....AND take individual voltage readings for your whole pack to compare each battery in the pack. Now you will have some good data to start the troubleshooting process with.

Readings taken while on charger or within 8 to 24 hours after being removed from charger really mean nothing as you are reading surface charge... While we don't know the age of your batteries the fact that you had 3 with exposed plates that once corrected you are having charging difficulties with rotten egg smell tells that you have BAD batteries... While you can take some voltage reading while under an operational load to determine which have gone south the sad fact is that for best performance you need to replace all batteries at one time or the older batteries cause your new batteries to age very quickly...

How long should they be off charge to get accurate hydrometer readings, I know voltage is inconclusive at best.

Thanks, I'm really anal about checking batteries every month, and more when it's hot.
I suspected Dpi control board but I'm not convinced yet. More tests needed. |
