Does everyone use the foam pre-filter?
Using my cart on road only. Foam seems unnecessary except in extremely dirty environments, or when regular filter maintenance may be neglected.

Re: Does everyone use the foam pre-filter?
I use it on the G22 (stock) because Yamaha says so. On my G16 yard cart, with Plowmans Hot setup--including Plowmans filter, I don't.

Re: Does everyone use the foam pre-filter?
I ask because I cleaned my new-to-me filter box and the deteriorated foam appeared to be more of a problem than a solution. Now one can make good argument that regular maintenance would have prevented the foam from becoming a crumbling dirt cake.

Re: Does everyone use the foam pre-filter?
I like to use the foam pre-filter. It doesn't seem to be restrictive and if it catches any dust before it gets to my paper filter then its a win in my mind. I'm not a K&N type filter fan personally and when I was using one on my new 460 the first thing I did was locate and buy a foam pre-filter. I'd like to have a good oil bath filter if I could find one for my application. I know that years ago when the paper filters were first getting to be widely used I read several comparisons of the amount of dirt being filtered and the oil bath always came out on top. Trouble with the oil bath is the maintenance of cleaning and refilling them

Re: Does everyone use the foam pre-filter?
I think it is mostly to catch things like fuzz off trees, leaves, things that fly around in the air. While the filter takes out the small dirt and dust. I always bought new for my G9 when it needed, but up to you. It can also possibly mess up the carb jetting on a yamaha they are freakishly sensitive to changes in air flow.
Now when I put in my clone I wanted more flow, I put a GM cavilier airbox and to combat dirt I piped it to the front of the cart. The filters are $7 and that is nice, but I have never put one in because they don't get dirty like the stock one did continuously. I think I got 2-3 years out of stock ones at best. The car filter is about 8" square with no prefilter. But the stock foam I think lasted much longer than 3 years, and I cleaned it every month or so in summer. I only ride offroad and lots of trails in the woods. |

Re: Does everyone use the foam pre-filter?
As previously indicated, it cannot hurt and saves on the main filter...
Where I am, it is ABSOLUTELY mandatory, or my main filter would be to change every 3 months max! At 7$ a brand new one, come on, get a new one!!! |

Re: Does everyone use the foam pre-filter?
No my car filter is $7, the yamaha filters are $20 or so for the filter and foam sleeve. I bought them every 2-3 year until I swapped the engine and put in the car airbox.
