Default Project `97 DCS Begins...

This fall I bought a '97 DCS for $300. It has no motor or batteries, and I am operating under the assumption the controller doesn't work (or won't work for my application). So I'm basically starting with a shell. I am in need of suggestions as I don't want to waste resources doing something stupid. So, I humbly come to the hive mind for direction.

Here's what I have:
Budget: around $2k
I already have 2ga wires and a bunch of the electronic odds and ends goodies going on the thing.

What I want to accomplish:
Neighborhood cruiser, probably rarely more than 2 people at a time. On-road 95% of the time, with only rare jaunts into level grassy areas (think golf course). No real hills to speak of.

I want as much speed as possible. It cannot be too fast. No lift. 48 volt. Probably 12" or 14" rims with low profile rubber. Also need a charger.

That's about it. I can hang all the doo-dads and other nonsense on it as I go along.

So where is my money best spent? I'm assuming a 500amp Alltrax. What about a motor?

I appreciate the willing spirit of helpfulness around here, so thanks in advance.

Charger is the easy part. DPI Accusense
http://www.cartsunlimited.net/48v_Battery_Charger.html

If run-time or range is factor, 8x6V would be a better 48V pack than 6x8v.
I'm splitting the difference with 7x6V for 42V

I sure some motor guys will be along soon.

That's the charger I was looking at. Good to know that's a quality piece.

I hope the motor guys come by soon. I'd like to get an order in and get this thing started!
