Re: 1989 Club Car, starter turns great, won't start
OK, that kind of sounds like a bad ignition coil (ignitor)Does yours have a two wire plug to the stator & pulser, or a 3 wire?

If the ignition coil is the back of the engine, it seems to have three wires in a pyramid plastic connector going to it.

Should look something like this:
https://www.bakerscartsupply.com/pro...ignitor250.jpg Before you go buying anything else you need to check a few things. Just up the wire from that 3 conductor plug there is a single wire plug that is the ground lead for the ignition coil. Try unplugging it first and see if that makes a difference. If yes then your problem is in that ground circuit. If no you need to check the exciter and pulser. To do that, unplug that 3 conductor plug and test the wires running into the engine case (not the end going to the ignition coil): TEST # 1 TAKE AN ohm READING BETWEEN THE RED AND BROWN WIRES. SHOULD BE AROUND 390 AND 400 OHMS. WITH THE ENGINE SPINNING OVER, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO READ ABOUT 80-90 VOLTS AC. TEST # 2 THE WHITE WIRE OR THE PULSER WIRE, SHOULD READ ABOUT 60-70 OHMS TO GROUND. |

Re: 1989 Club Car, starter turns great, won't start
meimk, I unplugged that ground lead and it backfired a few times and then roared to life!
This is awesome!!!! Thank you guys so much!!! Ran it around the block once and then parked it. Hooked the ground lead back up and it still runs!!! Think there is some kind of intermittent grounding issue that bouncing around "fixed" for the moment? I'll run the ohm tests this weekend and see what I can find. Thank you so much!!! |

Re: 1989 Club Car, starter turns great, won't start
Tried starting the cart this weekend, same problem as before, cart will not start, acting like it is getting no spark.
Unhooked the wire like meimk suggested, no change. What would you guys recommend next? Thank you! |

You say "acting like it is getting no spark". Have you checked with a spare plug held against ground to see if it really has spark or not? I just had one today that was described as no spark, but was actually flooded - carb needle valve had grit in it that kept it from closing. If it is truly no spark, try what I mentioned above to check the output on those 3 wires in your pyramid shaped connector. It will help track down your cause.
