Need winter golf cart storage advice
I have had various different electric golf carts over the last 8 years. I am located in central Wisconsin. Currently I have a 2009 Yamaha drive. It appears my 4 12V batteries are dead from this last winter. These were 2013 Napa batteries purchased new in 2014. I have done the same thing every year with my carts, charged them up good once the snow starts to fall, and they are stored in a garage. Come spring, I have never had a problem charging them up again. This year, the cart did not take a charge and my repair guy said all of the acid is gone and the batteries are dead. I have never had this issue before, especially with newer batteries. Any thoughts on what went wrong??

Re: Need winter golf cart storage advice
Lead Acid batteries self discharge fairly rapidly. Then need to be charged at least a couple times a month when they are sitting unused. That can be done by a maintainer - which is what I recommend. Acid does not vanish in batteries though unless you make a hole in the case and let it run out. The water evaporates or gets turned into Hydrogen and Oxygen by the charging process. If the batteries are dry, then they need water not acid. If they are stored where it can freeze, then they will freeze if they get discharged enough. If they are fully charged, they can stand very cold temps without freezing.

Use one of these..http://www.granitedigital.com/saveabattery.aspx
Worth every penny, won't off-gas batteries cause of low amp supply. Will restart if power goes out. 48 volt 2 amp. Had mine for 2 years now no problems. Keeps pack at constant 53 volts. I guess you could also put it on a timer to trigger every day or 2 if needed. BTW i keep mine plugged in all the time.Shop around ,price varies. |

Re: Need winter golf cart storage advice
Yes. You leave it plugged in all winter. Cart in Tow mode or disconnect one of the battery cables is even better.
