Default FE290 - rebuild myself or buy remanufactured?

I recently bought a 93 Club Car that I've taken down to the frame. The engine had a sizeable oil leak from the side cover. I popped the cover and things look pretty good (as much as you can tell with the naked eye). I also pulled the head and there isn't too much carbon buildup and the cylinder doesn't have any scratches. Since I don't have any idea of how many hours are on this engine, I would like to do a complete rebuild on it.

I'm having a hard time deciding if I should rebuild it myself or buy a remanufactured engine. If I rebuild it or buy a rebuilt engine, the question of aftermarket parts comes up. Are the aftermarket parts (rod, piston, bearings, gaskets, seals etc) available for this engine complete garbage or are they decent quality?

Anyone have experience buying a remanufactured engine? If so, who did you buy it from?

Thanks for any insight or feedback.

I rebuilt mine and would do it again if faced with the same choice. Read thru the thread below and you will get lots of good info. It fits your question exactly. I recommend OEM since I have had some bad experience with aftermarket parts.

Thanks for that link. My gut was saying to stick with OEM parts, but I just wanted to check in case aftermarket was "almost" as good.

Thanks again.
