Default Wiring.... lots of sparks!!

So I got this cart that was on its way to the scrap yard..

I checked the wiring according to the "Wiring on marathon resistor cart" sticky note.. when I turned no the switch and pressed the gas pedal, the ignition switch wire immediately blew. I thought maybe the switch I used was too small so I wired the ignition wires together, when I pressed the pedal the same thing, the jumper wire immediately blew.. I rechecked wiring and did notice that the diode on the solenoid was backwards from the diagram.. would that be enough to blow that wire??

Thanks,
Kevin

There is also a resistor across the high current poles of the solenoid..

Ok, got all that figured out. Had a wire that looked like it was there on the diagram connecting the top poles of the FR microswitches. I removed that and removed the diode, for now, to see how it goes. Now the cart is working... however.. as soon as the key is turned on it starts rolling.. does thei is foreard and Reversee.. the resistor pack is pretty loose and bent, I'm thinking it might be shorted there.....
