Default Melex 212

My golf cart advances in forward as normal but not in reverse. When the pedal is pressed in reverse the volt meter goes haywire and the cart does not reverse. Where do I start looking for a problem? I ordered a new solenoid, not in yet but what else could it be? Help needed!!!

I think the trouble is in the forward/reverse switch (aka F&R). If the solenoid clicks and the cart moves in forward it should do so in reverse as well. So we rule out the solenoid. The F&R has 2 small micro switches (aka ms) one activates the solenoid, be sure it is working properly in both directions.
If the solenoid clicks in both directions this ms is okay... that leaves the high amperage contacts inside the F&R suspect or the cables connected to them. Cables are pretty easy to visually inspect. A little tug and twist will confirm their solid connection.
If you got this far you probably need a fresh HD F&R switch. The early Ezgo HD switch fits this cart... search EZ585E
