Default 52 volt cart?

Guy I know is using five 8v batteries and one 12v at the end. No problem so far, but seems a bit risky to me.....

What are the tolerances for controllers? Is the range that broad?

I can't see any operational benefit in doing this. It may be difficult to correctly charge each battery in the battery group properly.

I guess time will tell. Let us know if and when something fries!

Charging may be the most difficult issue along with uneven battery drain/usage.

You are all correct… There is no way to efficiently or affectively charge that pack in a correct manner. He will definitely shorten their life. 😮

While 52V on a 48V controller would not concern me since design specs typically account for +/- 20%, charging properly is a big issue. The bigger issue to me is mixing batteries voltages and capacities. When using a power supply of any type, battery or otherwise, whether in series or parallel, it is critical to match power sources by their “Internal Resistance”. By design, a 12V battery will have a different internal resistance than an 8V battery and when internal resistances aren’t matched, the odd one out will always be depleted first. This is why changers have “Equilization” mode so one battery isn’t depleted quicker than the others. Unbalanced power can be catastrophic in certain situations.

Are you sure he is using the 12v battery in the pack for the motor?

I've seen some people install a separate 12v battery for accessories and charge it independently from the pack.

I have 12 volt along with 6-8 but not inline , like people said for accessory supply. But 5-8 and a 12 is never going to work correctly .

Five 8v and one 12V, not a spare battery, an inline series drivetrain battery....just waiting for it to fail..

I also have a 12v accessory battery in the hidden part of the rear of my cart, but that is totally different.

I just don't see how having an additional 4 volts is going to make any noticeable difference in cart performance.

I just picked up a 36 volt DS that has six 12 volt batteries. I'm still confused on this one
